Frequently asked questions

Q. Is this another intimidating gym?

A. We don’t think so…

CrossFit Nottingham is community based!!! This means we create a club like feel, no iPods are allowed, members chat and socialise together and will welcome you into the facility. Yes the workouts are hard, but everyone gets through them together, someone will pick themselves up and help you get through yours, you can ask questions and receive answers, you will be missed if your not attending your usual classes, all this makes your fitness and wellness more fun and more sustainable.

Q. Do i need to be fit to join?

A. No…

CrossFit can be applied at any level of fitness, the newcomers needs for fitness are the same as the experienced, they only differ in intensity! You can scale every movement in order to achieve your required level.

Q. What is Open Gym?

A. More time to practice…

Open gym is available at CrossFit Nottingham during opening hours. Individuals can come and train stand alone, choose a workout that suits a weakness, or just practice technique.

These sessions are not coached but instructors will be around to offer advice. These hours of operation are also ideal times to come and visit the facility and catch a glimpse of the evening class and chat with the CrossFit Nottingham community.

Q. What is a CrossFit WORKOUT OF THE DAY (WOD)?

A. WOD – The backbone of CrossFit

WOD stands for “Workout of the Day” and is your daily dose of CrossFit programmed specifically by the CrossFit Nottingham coaches, the WODs incorporate a mixture of weight lifting, gymnastics and metabolic conditioning (cardio work)….WHY?

1. GYMNASTS LEARN NEW SPORTS FASTER THAN OTHER ATHLETES.
2. OLYMPIC LIFTERS CAN APPLY MORE USEFUL POWER TO MORE ACTIVITIES THAN OTHER ATHLETES.
3. POWERLIFTERS ARE STRONGER THAN OTHER ATHLETES.
4. SPRINTERS CAN MATCH THE CARDIOVASCULAR PERFORMANCE OF ENDURANCE ATHLETES – EVEN AT EXTENDED EFFORTS.
5. ENDURANCE ATHLETES ARE WOEFULLY LACKING IN TOTAL PHYSICAL CAPACITY.
6. BODYBUILDERS CAN’T PUNCH, JUMP, RUN, OR THROW LIKE ATHLETES CAN.
7. SEGMENTING TRAINING EFFORTS DELIVERS A SEGMENTED CAPACITY.
8. OPTIMIZING PHYSICAL CAPACITY REQUIRES TRAINING AT UNSUSTAINABLE INTENSITIES.

The actual WOD takes anywhere from approx 5 to 25 minutes to complete depending on the athlete and workout focus that specific day, the prescribed routine is generally 3 days on with one day off. Understanding that this cannot fit into most lifestyles we at CrossFit Nottingham would recommend at least 3 times per week and where possible 4, those supplementing other training regimes or sports with CrossFit would be looked at on a bespoke basis.

Q. What is CrossFit?

A. CrossFit is the sport of fitness.

CrossFit was created by Greg Glassman a gymnast and coach, in the pursuit of a fitness program that delivered results. In 1995 he opened the first CrossFit Box (gym) in Santa Cruz California, shortly after his principles and methodology were offered to the masses via a grass roots, internet based worldwide affiliation CrossFit.com, with the aim of creating fitter and healthier communities across the globe.

CrossFit is a ‘strength and conditioning programme built on constantly varied, functional movements executed at high intensity’, providing competence in the 10 recognised physical skills:

1. CARDIO ENDURANCE
2. STAMINA
3. STRENGTH
4. SPEED
5. POWER
6. BALANCE
7. AGILITY
8. FLEXIBILITY
9. ACCURACY
10. COORDINATION

This broken down, simply means that before your body gets used to the same stimulus we keep your body constantly challenged, forcing it to adapt to the tasks at hand. We don’t put the body in unnatural positions through the use of machines, we instead mimic real life movements using large muscle groups in conjunction with each other. Weightlifting, rowing, kettle-bells and gymnastics are just a few of our staples. The workout is then completed as fast as possible by the individual, whilst maintaining the CrossFit standards and full range of movement. You are continually aiming to beat your previous best which acts as an excellent motivational tool.

The concept behind CrossFit is, General Physical Preparedness (GPP), the idea of being prepared physically and mentally for an infinite number of tasks, which are transferable to everyday life.
